Portfolio 04 - Unity Terrain

Final Result

This week's task was to learn pro builder and the Unity terrain tool to make a basic scene from a Tasmanian tourist location. My inspiration for this scene is the bridge at the Tasmanian botanic gardens (Japanese) garden section.

I started by creating the base terrain object for the scene and blocking in most of the large shapes and carving out where the general position of the bridge will go in the scene.

The overall terrain was set to a smaller size as my terrain scene is only visible through a window from the scene I already made earlier.

Following this, I used Polybuilder to create two staircase objects and an arch object between them as a representation of the bridge, scaling up the arch to make it wider reduces the steepness of the bridge and allowed me to quickly achieve the result I was looking for. Given that I wanted to put something together quickly I used some free assets on the Unity store.

For the terrain which consists of textures and foliage, I downloaded the unity terrain samples pack.

This allowed me to quickly texture and fill my little scene with appropriate textures and models to fill it out, below you can see the 3 textures i used for the scene, using the paint texture mode in terrain object paint, I layered on one of these three textures to break up the textures over the whole object.

Then using the paint trees tool, I loaded in some of the foliage assets provided from the free samples back and used the mass place trees to generate foliage over the terrain mesh.

I made the water by creating a simple plane and moving it lower to intersect with the terrain which creates the illusion of a body of water, the material is a free asset from the asset store listed below.

After more tweaking, I downloaded a free HDRI from Poly Haven called Nature reserver and set up the texture to cube and set up its corresponding material to be applied to the skybox.

Now the scene is set up and I am reasonably happy with it, if I had more time I would try to match the reference better, but I think its good enough for now.

Thanks for reading.
